Senior retirement homes - chose the one that suits your needs
Senior retirement homes are options that you need to consider for various reasons post retiring. An older couple living alone in a relatively large independent house is an invitation to burglars and other such elements. With old age approaching, it is sometimes advisable and even desirable to relocate to senior retirement homes closer to your children, who may be pursuing careers in other parts of the town. Additionally, your current home may not be best suited for living for old people. There may be steps to navigate, large maintenance requirements to be met and not so easy access to medical and transport facilities that may result in difficulties at a later stage. While some move to senior retirement homes immediately after retirement, there are others who move earlier. Moving earlier is recommended since adapting to new environments and new people gets more difficult as you grow older and less flexible.
There are certain senior retirement homes that are age restricted and require that at least one member of the family should be above a certain specified age. In most cases, the cut off age limits are 55 years of age or 62 years of age. On the other hand there are some that allow people as young as 35 to become retiring members. The main reason for this senior retirement homes to mention an age limit is to align with the lifestyle that they offer. Whether the facility is heavily loaded towards health care facilities of swimming pools and spas is defined by the age limit criteria.
Other senior retirement homes do not allow younger people to stay in the community on a full time basis. This means that the ownership or lease of the place can only be done for those who are above a certain specified age. In such cases the maintenance of the apartment and the up keep is managed by the authorities.
Modular senior retirement homes are those that allow elderly people to come in and live for shorter periods of time in a year. So while you may stay with your children for a few months or go off on a long vacation, you have the opportunity of coming back to your own leased home.
Some senior retirement homes provide assisted living as well. This basically means that while medical facilities are not provided in house, there are helpers provided for those who are not able to perform all the daily tasks independently. Full time or part time support is provided based on the need.
Shared housing is another type of housing option that allows you to share your apartment after retiring. The companion is chosen on the basis of the needs of the elderly and the ability to provide for those needs by the younger companion. The matching of these is done by professional organizations from the senior retirement homes.
